This is the largest community–wide food
box program in the area providing nutritionally balanced emergency food
assistance once per month for individuals and families in need. The box includes
items such as canned fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, macaroni and cheese,
soup, and bread. Families qualify at 130% of the Federal poverty level, which
for a family of four is $2,422 per month gross. Spanish translation is available
along with referrals to other Open Door programs and information regarding other
help agencies within the community. A total of 33,465 households/sacks were served
in 2009.
Often the question is asked about the difference between the Kansas Food Bank and
us. The program works very closely with the Kansas Food Bank that warehouses food
and distributes to food pantries in the state. Approximately 30-40% of the food
the Community Food Ministry distributes comes from our partnership with the Kansas
Food Bank, both through their donated and purchased food programs, the rest comes
from monetary and direct food donations.
Donations of non-perishable canned goods and hygiene items are welcomed and deeply
appreciated.

What is required for assistance?
- Your income must fall within the income guidelines listed under Monthly Income Guidelines below.
- Verification of income if you have income.
- Identification for all members of the household.
- Proof of address (we do not serve homeless individuals at the Community Food Ministry)

Call for days and hours of operation
A monthly food box program for income eligible elders age 60+, postpartum women
for one year, pregnant women, and children from birth to the month they turn six
years old who do not receive services from another government voucher program, Women
Infants Children (WIC). This program’s food is provided by USDA through the State
of Kansas and may include such items as canned juice, fruit, vegetables, milk &
meat, peanut butter or dry beans, cereal, macaroni or rice, and 2# of cheese for
each family member who qualifies by age and income. It is available in Sedgwick,
Butler, Reno, Pratt, Sumner, Kingman, Harper, Harvey, Chautauqua, Cowley, and Stafford
counties in Kansas. Women and children are qualified at 185% of Federal poverty
level ($3,400 gross monthly income for a family of four); elders qualify at 130%
of the Federal poverty level ($1,579 gross monthly income for two in the household).
